111 Period 2: FUNCTION—Giving reasons Objectives ● To learn to give reasons in English ● To ask and give reasons in situational dialogues Procedures ▇ Warming up by learn to “reason” ＊ I’d like to know the reason why you’re so late. ＊ We aren’t going for the simple reason that we can’t afford it. ＊ She gave no reasons for her decision. ＊ I have no particular reason for doubting him. ＊ He said no but he didn’t give a reason. ＊ Give me one good reason why I should help you. ＊ For some reason (= one that I don’t know or don’t understand) we all have to come in early tomorrow. ＊ The man attacked me for no apparent reason. ＊ She resigned for personal reasons. ＊ For reasons of security the door is always kept locked. ＊ He wants to keep them all in his office for reasons best known to himself. ＊ ‘Why do you want to know?’ ‘No reason’ (= I do not want to say why). ＊ ‘Why did she do that?’ ‘She must have her reasons’ (= secret reasons which she does not want to tell). ＊ (formal) He was excused by reason of (= because of) his age. ＊ They have reason to believe that he is lying. ＊ We have every reason (= have very good reasons) to feel optimistic. ＊ This result gives us all the more reason for optimism. ＊ She complained, with reason (= rightly), that she had been underpaid. ＊ You have no reason to accuse him of laziness. ＊ Only human beings are capable of reason (= of thinking in a logical way, etc.). ＊ I can’t get her to listen to reason. ＊ Why can’t they see reason? ＊ He’s looking for a job and he’s willing to do anything within reason. ＊ It stands to reason that they’ll leave if you don’t pay them enough. ＊ She reasoned that she must have left her bag on the train. ＊ They couldn’t fire him, he reasoned. ＊ Reason it out for yourself! ＊ I tried to reason with him, but he wouldn’t listen. How to ask and give reasons in English? We might use the following sentence patterns. I think that our products are better quality than theirs. How do you feel about the new design? I don't feel that our ads are reaching customers. What do you think about the new marketing strategy? I agree with you about selling direct to the customer. Sandra feels the price is too high and I think so too. ■Giving Opinions in English To give opinions in English you can use the following expressions: I think... I feel... In my opinion,... If you ask me,... Examples: I think televised violence affects children negatively. I believe teen drinking is a serious problem. I think bungee jumping is thrilling, but also dangerous. In my opinion, you have to be crazy to go sky diving! If you ask me, cloning of humans is wrong. Try It! Express your own opinions. Think about how you would answer these questions about some of the topics you have read about in this magazine. Begin each answer with the expression that follows it. What is the most thrilling sport? I think... What is the most dangerous sport? I feel... Which is more exciting, surfing or skiing? In my opinion... Does tv violence desensitize children? I don't believe... Do you think parents should control what their children watch on TV? If you ask me,... Are movies too violent these days? In my opinion,... Is it acceptable to clone animals? If you ask me,... Should scientists clone humans? In my opinion... Would you like to be cloned yourself? I don't think... Do you think...? Should...? ■Asking and giving reasons in situational dialogues Now in pairs you are going to practice asking and giving reasons. The following example might be of help to you. A: What do you think of that tea set (茶具) as a gift for my parents? B: Not bad, but I don't particularly care for the design. I'd prefer something more typically Chinese. A: Yes, maybe you're right. How about that design over there? It's typically Chinese, isn't it, Jack? B: Very much so. But somehow the color doesn't appeal to me. A: Nor to me. Let's look for something else. Oh, look at those tablecloths there. They're lovely. They'd be useful, too. Don't you think so, Jack? B: I quite agree. ■Learning more useful expressions Here are some more examples of asking and giving reasons. Read them and make similar sentences. 1. I think our English teacher is better than yours. He is more experienced and humorous. 我认为我们的英语老师比你们的要好。他更有经验、更幽默。 2. I agree with you about selling direct to the customer. 我同意你的观点，直接销给顾客。 3. In my opinion, the house isn't worth the price they're asking. 依我看，这房子不值他们要的价。 4. If you ask me, I think men and women should be equal. 如果你要征求我的意见，我认为男女应该平等。 5. From my point of view, this plan is practical. 我认为这个计划是可行的。 6. Personally, I think high school students shouldn't own mobile phones. 我个人认为高中生不应该拥有手机。 7. We think Super Voice Girls is very enjoyable. What are your ideas? Do you have any thoughts on that? How do you feel about that? Giving Opinions I think we should get a new car. I don’t think we need one. I believe (that) smoking should be outlawed. I don’t believe (that) it should be illegal. In my opinion, Gone with the Breeze is the best movie ever made. I feel that it’s the right thing to do. I don’t feel that it’s such a good idea. 111
